Yellowridge Construction – Organizational Design

Client Vision and Intent

Yellowridge Construction is a general contractor located in Port Moody, B.C., which has been in operation for over 60 years. They have had success in delivering projects across the Lower Mainland and wanted to improve the performance of their team and revamp their organizational chart in order to build on this success. They also wanted to rethink their approach to hiring and look at optimized approaches to onboarding effective staff.

In order to achieve these goals the Yellowridge Construction senior management wanted to acquire an in-depth understanding of their employees’ attitudes and behaviours before using these insights to analyze gaps in their operational capacity and expertise. Virtus Groups identified a method to achieve this, involving the utilization of our proprietary testing tool and an analysis of the results.

 

Virtus Groups Development of Plan

Virtus Group established that the utilization of three modules within our testing suite would be most useful in analyzing Yellowridge Construction’s employees. The tests to be used were Learned Optimism, Personality Style Indicator, and Big 5. The combined use of these assessments would provide quantitative evidence of what types of work and task each of their employees were suited to, how they interact with their colleagues, and on their alignment with the organizations’ culture and goals. The Virtus Groups team administered these assessments to 60 employees as identified by Yellowridge Construction. The assessments were administered using Virtus Groups proprietary web-based platform, which enabled the employees to complete the tests remotely and fit them into their schedule. Virtus team also provided on-going support and troubleshooting for any employees who encountered difficulty.

 
 

Virtus Groups Executes the Plan

Organizational Analysis:

While Yellowridge Construction’s employees completed their assessments, the Virtus Talent team conducted an analysis of Yellowridge Constructions roles and assigned each with score benchmarks. The intent was to assess each employees’ scores against the ideal and preferred ranges of score for each tested category with a view to identifying employees who were strong performers given their temperamental suitability to their role and, conversely, those employees who were unsuited to their roles and, perhaps, underperforming. The Yellowridge Construction senior management team received a comprehensive analysis package which comprised of:

  • Detailed explanations of the assessments used
  • Breakdowns of their roles and the result baselines assigned to each
  • Results and analysis of results for each employee

The Virtus team also conducted a detailed presentation to the Yellowridge Construction group as part of the delivery of these results. This interactive session was an opportunity for the management group to attain actionable insights on where their operational blind spots were. It was also a chance for the Virtus team to share best practices for use of our assessment tools.

 

Recruitment Support:

Following on from this round of assessments and the training sessions the management group decided to incorporate the Virtus candidate assessment tool into their hiring process. They understood the value of onboarding individuals who are demonstrably a strong fit for the opportunity and they recognized that their current recruitment process could not achieve this as effectively without utilizing our assessment tools. It was decided that Yellowridge Construction’s HR team and the Virtus Groups talent team would work collaboratively on finding the organization a Project Coordinator. Our team reached out to applicants, assessed, and interviewed candidates, and presented shortlisted candidates to Yellowridge Construction HR for final interview.

The Virtus Groups team also administered the assessments to candidates identified by Yellowridge Construction’s HR team. The results were then assessed by the Virtus team with suitable candidates, and the characteristics which made them suitable, being highlighted to Yellowridge Construction HR. They were, then, able to onboard a team member whose attitudes and behaviours aligned with the organization’s desired profile.

 

Result

Yellowridge Construction acquired a quantitative understanding of their employees’ personal characteristics and insights into how these characteristics impacted upon their employees’ performance. They then analyzed the results, reflecting on their successes and failures, which helped them to identify gaps in their organizational chart and areas where they could improve their recruitment process. This led to the implementation of the Virtus Groups recruitment process by the organization which led them to hiring a candidate who fit perfectly with their desired profile, resulting in a tangible improvement in their organization. The Yellowridge Construction management team were able to achieve this outcome with minimal effort on their behalf.
