Simply Benefits is a third-party payer that provides employee health benefits, 100% digitally. With Simply Benefits, advisors, employers, and employees can manage their individual employee benefits needs on their own dedicated platform. Now creating a plan design, e-signing a master application, and submitting claims is easier than ever.

Their main competitors are large insurance companies and third-party payers with limited and outdated technology. Simply Benefits offers the same benefits and has a similar business model, but with modern technology and paperless processes to set them apart and make managing benefits easier for everyone.

Traction

They started production in August of 2018 with two employees and launched Simply Benefits in August of 2020 with a total of 16 employees. They’ve raised over $1 million in funding and are rapidly growing in size and hiring to meet the industry’s demand to bring employee health insurance into the modern tech age.

Their largest hurdle for 2021 will be expanding into new markets within Canada and having trained staff available to support their expected growth.

 

Team

Jeff Cox, Co-Founder & CEO: Jeff has been an advisor for over 12 years. Frustrated by the lack of innovation and the constant push back from insurers, Jeff set out to make a change in the industry and created Simply Benefits. In 2020, Jeff was named one of Kelowna’s Top 40 Under 40 for his career achievements and involvement within the community.

Eric Wein, Co-Founder & CTO: Eric has been coding since the age of ten and has a history of creating scalable enterprise applications for Fortune 500 companies. Having spent the last number of years creating communication tools, he has been the ideal fit for the benefits space.

 

 

 
 

Funding

Simply Benefits is looking to secure funding from a strategic partner who can invest capital in their organization and be involved long-term. They aim to expand operations within Canada and grow their team as they ramp up their services and client base in 2021. This funding will allow them to create new, valuable features, manage more clients and advisor onboarding, as well as the market in major cities.

Simply Benefits has recently leased a second office to account for their rapidly expanding team. They are currently hiring software engineers and insurance specialists, with more opportunities to come soon.

 

 

Revenue Model

Simply Benefits utilizes trusted and experienced advisors to sell their product and offer their clients the same great health benefits as any other insurance provider (Dental, Extended Health Care, Vision, Drugs, Life, Dependent Life, AD&D, Critical Illness, HSA, LSA, etc), but on a completely digital platform. In other words, they didn’t reinvent the industry, they just made it digital.

They are also the first product within Canada to completely digitize the entire onboarding and enrollment process (from Advisor to Employee). Some of the features they offer include:

  • Advisor: digital onboarding, quick census upload (via CSV or manually), digital plan designs (create multiple at once), e-signatures, and more.
  • Employer: digital onboarding, mass email and push notifications (to their employees), digital employee information updates/terminations/additions, online billing, and more.
  • Employee: digital drug cards, digital claim submission, 10-minute digital enrollment, AI-powered search, easy coverage lookup, and much more.

They also offer the ability for employers and advisors to completely own the benefits experience (Whitelabel) with their organization’s branding, so their clients and employees view Simply Benefits as their own.

They currently only offer their product in British Columbia and Alberta, with expansion to new provinces expected in early 2021.
